Libraries as cultural institutions and as traditional repositories of knowledge and the cultural memory are faced with a reevaluation of their role in the face of the emergent knowledge society. The design of library spaces as seen in such new facilities as the San Francisco and Seattle Public libraries and in the “information commons” movement in Academic libraries reflect attempts to come to grips with changes in the fabric of knowledge itself. How can public space reflect values that provide an integrative experience in the face of pervasive cultural clutter and its concomitant dullness? What needs are being fulfilled by these spaces and in what ways are they addressing or failing to address the greater good and the furtherance of knowledge?
