Two Faces of War: Rhetorical Positioning in Ethnic Newspapers

The conflicts in once Yugoslavia during the 1990s have been studied extensively. One area that has not been explored, however, is the position of ethnic newspapers aimed at Serbian and Croatian emigrants outside of the Balkans. This paper attempts to begin to address that lack, by a study of two such newspapers which are the major papers for the Serb and the Croat readership in the United States. Those papers are the Zajednicar (Croatian-American) and the American Srbobran (Serbian American,) This paper, which is the start of a more extensive study, focuses on the first year of the conflict, in 1991. However, as indicated on the final page, the pattern set here continues today.
