Professor Tom Nairn’s call for participants in the February 2007 International Symposium on New Directions in the Humanities at Columbia University raised a number of questions and topics for consideration. This paper briefly discusses several of these, along with what I believe to be the central problem in the humanities today and what can be done to solve it.

I began the serious study of literature in high school. As an undergraduate, I gave guest lectures on Chaucer, Wycherley, and Proust; studied French, philosophy and history as well as literature in English; and published a translation from the French of François Villon. In graduate school at Northwestern I specialized in the history and theory of the novel; my doctoral dissertation was a translation of Raymond Queneau’s book of essays Bâtons, chiffres et lettres, with a general introduction to his work. Part of this translation, Queneau’s preface to Flaubert’s novel Bouvard and Pécuchet, was published with Mark Polizzotti’s translation of the novel (Dalkey Archive, 2005). Continuing interests also include American history and policy.
