Professor Tom Nairn’s call for participants in the February 2007 International Symposium on New Directions in the Humanities at Columbia University raised a number of questions and topics for consideration. This paper briefly discusses several of these, along with what I believe to be the central problem in the humanities today and what can be done to solve it.
